Playing with Fire

Elita

The tension in the dining hall is thick as soon as I entered and hasn’t let up since. We’ve been eating in silence. Cyrus is brooding at the head of the table, looking more like a storm cloud than a man. Across from me, Caelum is doing an impressive job of appearing nonchalant, but the rigid set of his shoulders tells a different story.

I’m not sure what’s happened since I last saw him, and I’m just hoping to eat and run back to my room as quickly as possible.

Suddenly, Cyrus’s voice shatters the silence. “That vermin, Leo,” he spits at me, his voice a scathing snarl that cuts through the strained silence. “Thinks he can take down all of my strongholds and get away with it. He’s corrupted Milan’s mind, turned my own blood into a tool to tear down everything I’ve built.”

A lump forms in my throat at the mention of Leo’s name, and now his mood makes more sense. And something inside me fills with hope. Leo is out there looking for me, and I know he won’t stop until he finds me. I take a deep breath trying to keep my zen but I have a feeling it’s not going to be that easy.

“And Milan,” Cyrus growls, his fist slamming onto the table, causing the silverware to clatter and the goblets to slosh. “A traitorous viper, slithering behind Leo like a love-sick puppy.”

I almost let out a laugh, but clamp my mouth shut. Milan, love sick over Leo? Now that is something I thought I’d never hear. I grip my fork harder, trying to keep my expression neutral. But I need to bite my tongue, maintain this charade. My very survival depends on it.

“Perhaps,” Cyrus muses, a cold smile playing at his lips, “I should’ve disposed of Milan at his birth. Taken you instead. Would have spared myself years of dealing with that insubordinate imbecile.”

My heart stops at his words, and any laughter I had dies in my throat. I can feel my face flush with rage. Cyrus is talking about killing his own son, dismissing him just like he dismissed me, leaving me with my so-called mother. The rage inside snaps from all I have dealt with and held inside today.

“He’s not a lovesick puppy!” My voice rings out, surprising even myself. “He hates Leo just as much as you do. He’s just looking for me.”

Cyrus’s icy eyes narrow, calculating and dangerous. “You’re defending him?” he accuses, his voice low and dangerous. “Your precious fiancé is killing humans and shifters en-masse, and you defend him? You think he’s some gracious King? Perhaps you should learn of the atrocities he’s committed in the past.”

His words crash over me, a cold wave that leaves me gasping for breath. Leo’s what? I really have no idea now what he is talking about. But before I can scramble for a response, Cyrus raises a hand, cutting me off.

“In fact,” he says, his voice icy and sharp. “I never want to hear you defend your traitorous rat of a brother again.
